Activities for School Groups

We have activities and presentations to support and extend your student’s specialized interests and learning in extra-curriculum classes such as hands-on learning, gardening and environmental groups.

Choose from four sessions that are all 'hands on' and practical, empowering students to make a difference.

All learning and creations will provide direct assistance to wildlife and biodiversity by supporting rehabilitated animals or enhancing habitat.

1.Walk and Talk - Increase the Habitat Value of Your School's Grounds

Our ‘walk and talk’ activity is designed to inspire and motivate students and help them identify ways they can directly assist wildlife. This incursion has been successful in school gardening and environmental groups.

We start by helping students identify the animals that would be visiting and living in the school grounds.  We then chat about the grounds from the wildlife’s perspective, identifying changes or additions that would enhance the area for wildlife.

This activity empowers students to think about changes, often quite simple ones that can be easily achieved and incorporated into their grounds and make a big difference to wildlife.

‘Walk and Talk’ takes approximately 30 to 40 minutes, you can add a 10 minute PowerPoint presentation to learn about our local wildlife diversity and the role of rescue and rehabilitation.

Cost

$65 per session delivered within the Franks ton City Council area. For bookings outside of this area a travel charge of $0.65 per kilometre from Frankston CBD return will be added.

2. Create a Ringtail Possum Drey (Nest)

Ringtail possums (Pseudocheirus peregrinus) in rehabilitation are provided a man-made drey that goes with them when they are released following rehabilitation. Creating these essential homes provides students the opportunity to directly help rehabilitated wildlife.

We provide the materials and assistance to create purpose built dreys that will make a difference to amazing little ringtail possums on release. This activity includes an introduction to these fascinating and unique animals to inspire students and give them an understanding of how these specialized animals survive the urbanized environment.

Students who have participated in this activity report feeling a sense of achievement and pride knowing they are contributing directly to the rehabilitation of their local wildlife by making a drey for a local wildlife shelter to utilize.

3. Create a ‘Water for Wildlife’ Dish

Every year carers rescue and rehabilitate wildlife suffering from heat stress. In many instances these rescues could easily be avoided if the wildlife had safe access to fresh water.

This session includes a brief stroll through the school grounds to discuss where water dishes would be best placed and which local species would access them. The same principles can be applied in the home garden.

Students then create their own water dish for wildlife to take home and use in their garden. Alternatively, students can work collaboratively and make a water dish for the school grounds.

We suggest you allow 30 minutes to create the Water for Wildlife dishes. Add 15 minutes for a PowerPoint presentation, which includes video footage of local wildlife, and learn how our beautiful wildlife benefit from water dishes.

4. Create an Insect & Skink Home or a Native Bee Hotel

Insects are not only fascinating but play a crucial role in our environment. Students will discover that insects provide more than just food and that some simple changes to support insects will also support other wildlife.

Choose to create an Insect & Skink Home or a Native Bee Hotel. These can then be used to enhance the habitat of your school grounds or taken home by students.

Allow approximately 30 minutes to create your preferred habitat enrichment item. If you have time we can add a 15 minute PowerPoint presentation to learn about local wildlife diversity and the role of rescue and rehabilitation
